Kunichika studied with the great woodblock master Utagawa Kunisada (Toyokuni III). He is best known for his colorful woodblocks of Kabuki actors, but he also created prints of beautiful women and historical scenes. Although focusing on traditional subject matter, Kunichika embraced the use of modern materials from the West, like the aniline dyes that produce the vivid reds and purples often found in his prints. Kunichika is considered one of the last masters of the traditional style of ukiyo-e print. Each work is archivally double matted and tastefully framed with a simple black frame with antique gold detail.
